Winter Off The Mountain

Folks who love winter tend to be skiers.  But we know that isn't 100% true all the time.  We love just about everything to do with snow.  Here are some links to our favorite winter activities and places to go. Hopefully we'll be getting to all these as blog posts too...........

Catkill Scenic Trail.  www.catskillscenictrail.org   The best place to go cross country skiing and winter walking with the dogs.  The trail is used by local snowmobilers so it is groomed and packed for an easy surface to glide and walk on.  It starts north of Roxbury off Route 30, wraps around in Grand Gorge heading northwest on Route 23 to Stamford where it peels off due west along Route 10 ending in Bloomville.  About 20 miles in all.  There are bits below Roxbury as it follows the old railbed right into Arkville and the Delaware and Ulster train yard.  You can rent cross country skis at the ski shop at the base of Belleayre Mountain on Route 28, Highmount.  You can rent snowshoes at Plattekill in Roxbury.

Catskill Mountain Club  www.catskillmountainclub.org   The volunteer members of this group will be hiking and ice fishing and who knows what all winter long.  Stay tuned to their website for upcoming events and sign up for their hiking notifications.  Think about making a donation too. This is the group that heads up the amazing Lark in the Park event every October.

Central Catskill Trail Association   www.centralcatskilltrail.com   Local snowmobile club from Andes to Stamford.  If you're a member they'll give you their trail map.

Try something new this winter and stay tuned in here........
